These are the closest thing to true coaching ‘masterclasses’ that we know: a chance to see a live professional coaching session in action and to see an expert in the field demonstrate great coaching with different models, for different purposes, in different environments. Coaching Chemistry

A chemistry session is typically the first encounter between a coach and client, an informal meeting to work out whether you can trust and work with this person (a decision that goes both ways).  Despite the critical role this encounter plays in a coaching engagement, surprisingly little attention is given to what makes a good ‘chemistry’ session.

Attendees at this event can watch experienced coach and Meyler Campbell Faculty member Sheldon Daniel explore the art of a chemistry conversation, working with a volunteer participant whom he has not coached before. The session will examine this unique coaching moment in its many dimensions: part conversation, part assessment, part contracting, and part experience of the future relationship itself.

In this initial encounter, Sheldon will aim to establish the foundational conditions for trust, honesty, and safety within the coaching relationship. The client will have an opportunity to clarify their goals, experience Sheldon’s relational and human-centred coaching approach, all in service of assessing mutual fit.

Coaching Choices

Rather than treating ‘chemistry’ as purely instinctive or intuitive, with the risk that unconscious preferences or biases may shape the encounter, the session will focus on the choices a coach makes: how to begin, how much to structure, when to inquire, when to explain, and how to test whether the relationship feels right for both parties.

By attending this event, Sheldon will explore practical ways to assess your own chemistry meetings to:

• Consider how to assess fit beyond ‘vibe’ and how to notice the subtle ways familiarity, similarity, status, culture, and bias can shape our sense of chemistry
• Learn how to structure your own chemistry sessions, how to notice what is happening in the relationship, and how to think more carefully about “fit”
• Consider how you might bring a standardised approach to chemistry sessions that allows you to learn about them, for them to learn something about you, and to experience the coaching environment you will create for them.

If you want to feel more confident, intentional, and human in the very first coaching conversation then this is an event you will not want to miss.
