Description

Our Psychology Distilled events cover the full sweep of psychology, from Freud, to leadership, to neuroscience. Each session is self-contained, so you can attend the individual topics that particularly grab you and still gain a comprehensive yet compressed coverage of the discipline of psychology as it relates to coaching practice.

————————————————–

This is Session 2 of 2. Both events can be attended as standalone sessions, but you’ll have a richer experience by attending both. You can register for Session 1 here: Interoception: The Science Behind It with Dr Jenny Murphy: Session #1 (Hybrid)

Understanding emotion recognition

Recognising what other people are feeling is one of the most important, and often overlooked, skills in human social life. As we know, much of coaching depends on our understanding of what another person is thinking, feeling, or experiencing, and we routinely use facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, and behaviour to make these judgements. But how do we learn to do this in the first place, and how accurate are we?

In this Psychology Distilled seminar Dr. Jenny Murphy, an internationally recognised expert in experimental psychology, will explore the psychology of understanding emotion recognition in others. Drawing on research from emotion science, interoception, developmental psychology, and social cognition, the session will examine why humans express emotions, how we learn to recognise them, and the cues we rely upon when interpreting the experiences of others.

Relevance to coaching

Many coaching approaches place significant emphasis on understanding what clients are feeling, yet psychology suggests that recognising emotions is more complex than simply reading facial expressions. This session will provide attendees with:

  • an exploration behind how humans recognise emotions and internal states in others, why misunderstandings occur, and what factors influence our interpretations,
  • a deeper understanding of the processes involved in social perception to leave with a more nuanced perspective on how people communicate emotion and experience, and
  • an evidence-based overview of how humans infer internal states in others and the factors that shape these judgements.

By understanding the psychological processes involved, coaches will be better equipped to reflect on their own assumptions, interpret client behaviour more thoughtfully, and appreciate the considerable individual differences that exist in emotional expression and understanding.

Leave with a richer understanding of how humans come to understand one another and why this process is often more complex than it first appears.

About Dr. Jenny Murphy

Dr. Jenny Murphy

Dr. Jenny Murphy is an Associate Professor at the University of Surrey and also serves as the Associate Head of External Engagement for the School of Psychology at the University of Surrey. Her research focuses on the interplay between interoception (the perception of the body’s internal state), social cognition and mental health, and how these might vary across development.

Much of Jenny’s work involves translating complex scientific ideas into clear, engaging explanations without losing the nuance or rigour of the underlying research. Her achievements have been recognised by the Association for Psychological Sciences Rising Star Award and the European Society for Cognitive and Affective Neuroscience Young Investigator Award. Most recently she was recognised with early career awards from the Experimental Psychology Society and the Society for Psychophysical Research.

A strong believer in rigour, but not unnecessary seriousness, Jenny aims to create learning environments where people can engage with challenging ideas while still enjoying themselves.  Expect humour to be woven into the discussion, as a powerful tool to build trust and encourage openness and reminding us that everyone is learning, no matter how experienced they are.
