The Z-Curve

Mastered Alumnus Alberto Torres argues that leaders can anticipate disruption by understanding the Z-Curve, enabling organisations to reinvent early and thrive amid rapid AI-driven technological change.

Alberto says, “The book is about why companies fail in the face of technological disruption. While it isn’t necessary about coaching and mentoring, I think it provides a window into the kind of mental patterns that executives face and that can be improved by coaching. I think the concept is particularly relevant with AI looming.”

Here is an abstract from Alberto’s Z-Curve:

No other force has determined the fate of corporations like technological disruption. Over the last few decades, giants like Apple, Amazon, Google and NVIDIA have emerged while once-household names like Xerox, Nokia, AOL and Blockbuster have disappeared or been reduced to shadows of their former selves.

With new forces like generative and agentic AI, quantum computing, and genetic engineering, the  every business executive will have to deal with disruption in the foreseeable future.

The Z-Curve provides the means to understand the mechanisms of disruptions, why it so difficult for managers to recognize and act to prevent it them and, most importantly, what can be done to survive and thrive in the face of disruption.
