What do people do post-Mastered? In our Tales from Beyond series, we hear from Graduates of our Mastered programme so that they can share their many and varied stories.
This month, 2013 Mastered Alumna Cheryl Gowdie recounts the decision she made to embark on an exciting new journey from MD of an innovative HR consultancy business to setting up her own successful coaching practice in the US.
What were you doing before the Mastered Programme?
Before joining the Mastered Programme, I was Managing Director at an innovative HR consulting business nestled within a prestigious accounting practice in the vibrant heart of the City of London. In this dynamic role, I led a talented team, harnessing our collective expertise to devise creative strategies tailored to the intricate needs of our diverse clients. This work is one of my many achievements, I built that business unit from the ground up, and its continued success serves as a testament to my commitment and vision, making it a cherished part of my professional legacy.
What direction have you gone in since finishing the Mastered Programme? What are you doing now?
Since completing the Mastered Programme, I have embarked on an exciting new journey. Shortly after finishing the programme, I made the bold decision to emigrate to the United States. Upon arrival, I dedicated myself to establishing a successful coaching practice. While the path has been fraught with challenges, the rewards are truly invaluable.
In addition to my coaching work, I returned to university to pursue a Ph.D. in psychology, diving deep into the intricacies of human behaviour and mental well-being. My passion for writing has also blossomed during this time; I have authored two impactful books: Job Success in 90 Days: Navigating a Successful Job Transition[1], which offers practical strategies for career advancement, and a recent co-authored work entitled Forgiveness is Freedom: Unloading the Burden of Unforgiveness[2], which explores the transformative power of letting go of resentment.
Each of these endeavours has enriched my life and enabled me to contribute meaningfully to the fields of coaching and psychology.
What impact did the Mastered programme have for you?
Prior to the Mastered programme, I approached coaching with scepticism, unsure of its potential benefits. However, after completing the programme, my doubts were completely transformed. The experience broadened my perspective and provided me with invaluable insights and tools that I never expected. I became a true convert, recognizing the profound impact coaching can have on personal and professional growth.
What are some examples of things you have done differently since the Mastered programme?
Since completing the Mastered programme, I have significantly transformed my coaching style. For example, I’ve adopted a more non-directional approach, empowering my coachees to take the initiative and showcase their unique talents. This shift has deepened my appreciation for their individuality and creativity. Furthermore, I have honed my listening skills, allowing me to engage more deeply and responsively in our conversations, fostering a more collaborative and insightful coaching experience.
What was the most valuable thing you got from Mastered that you are using now?
One of the most striking aspects I discovered is the distinctive nature of coaching compared to other forms of intervention. I have witnessed firsthand the profound impact that coaching can have on individuals who are genuinely prepared and motivated to embrace change. This transformative experience empowers them to clarify their goals and unlock their true potential, making the coaching process incredibly effective and fulfilling.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I envision a harmonious blend of my passion for coaching and my deep love of reading and writing. I dream of establishing a cozy, inviting coaching practice nestled within a charming book and tea shop. In this serene space, clients would engage in meaningful coaching sessions and savour the simple pleasures of flipping through the pages of a captivating book while sipping a fragrant cup of tea. This unique environment would foster personal growth and relaxation, creating an enriching experience for everyone who walks through the door.
Anything else you would like to say?
I am deeply grateful to the early leaders at Meyler Campbell, whose encouragement inspired me to pursue the Mastered Programme. Reflecting on my journey, I may have overlooked this incredible opportunity if I had not embraced the chance to delve into coaching in a more profound and meaningful way.
