Coaching in the German market

Meyler Campbell CEO, Catherine Devitt, recently discussed the benefits and opportunities for coaching in the German market with Barbara Kearney, Mastered Alumna and Chair of our German Chapter of Alumni.

With the global coaching market continuing to grow, we interviewed Catherine Devitt, CEO of Meyler Campbell London, about the benefits and opportunities of coaching, and about Meyler Campbell’s work in the German market. You can read the full interview in English below, or click here to read the full German translation.

1. The demand for coaching in Germany is growing. In March 2021, the cover of the Wirtschafts Woche magazine featured coaching as its main title - what are the benefits of executive coaching?
There are many benefits, but in a nutshell, executive coaching provides very busy leaders with invaluable space to think, to re-energise, and to develop their leadership insight. Given the paradigm shift that the global pandemic has created, coaching is becoming even more urgently needed. Leaders are finding themselves in uncharted territory of having to lead remotely, in person and through hybrid channels – while often being exhausted themselves, and leading teams and organisations that are also very stretched. This new world of work requires new ways to lead, and coaching is fast becoming one of the most important tools for leaders to call upon.

2. Coaching training schools are springing up like mushrooms, what makes Meyler Campbell so special?
Since 1999 we have been a global center of expertise for training leadership coaches of the highest calibre. We are very selective about the candidates we accept. That is our biggest differentiating factor: all the coaches we train are proven and experienced leaders. On top of that they then add rigorous business coaching skills. That combination gives them a unique edge, as they truly understand corporate realities, enabling them to work with organizations, leaders, entrepreneurs, and their teams.

Often the task they are working on is helping clients to achieve clarity. In our experience, clarity is easy to talk about and hard to achieve. But when it comes to leadership that gets results, there's no substitute. We are especially happy to see that our community of trained executive coaches is growing in Germany and having a positive impact, helping organizations move forward and unlock positive change. By focusing on rigorous training, practical experience, and thought leadership, we ensure the Meyler Campbell community remains one of the world's most highly regarded group of coaches for leaders.

3. What does your presence look like in Germany?
At the heart of Meyler Campbell is our generous, lively, and eclectic global community, working around the world and across all sectors.  Over the last three years, our community in Germany has been growing particularly strongly, and we now have a high calibre, multi-lingual and diverse alumni network on the ground. It is great to see the impact they are having, helping organizations and start-ups unleash the leadership needed to move forward and unlock positive change.

4. What would you say to someone who has doubts about investing in executive coaching?
There are many benefits of coaching and the numbers back it up; according to the ICF, 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence, and over 70% benefit from improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills. From an investment point of view 86% of companies report that they more than recouped their spend on coaching.[1] According to researchers at Oxford Saïd Business School, there is also evidence coaching enhances leaders’ conflict management skills, team leadership, and strategic thinking[2].

5. Coaching and leadership - these two terms belong together like strategy and consulting. What are your thoughts?
I totally agree and can only recommend leaders to read the game-changing article “Leader as Coach” by Meyler Campbell cofounder and associate scholar at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School, Anne Scoular, and Herminia Ibarra, Professor of Organizational Behavior at London Business School, https://hbr.org/2019/11/the-leader-as-coach . In today’s new reality, companies need to move away from traditional command-and-control to a different model. Manager should be able to offer support and guidance, helping employees adapt to the constantly changing work environment to unleash fresh energy, innovation and commitment. When leaders know how to coach, they are able to ask better questions and create non-judgmental and safe environments of support, facilitating better development opportunities. Our Meyler Campbell trained executive coaches in Germany and around the world can definitely make a difference in helping leaders experience this for themselves, and broaden their range of strategic options.

Thanks, Catherine.
